Hope: a commentary

Hope is such an ineffectual sentiment, don't you find? I do. Personally, I gave it up a long time ago, deeming it useless.

Listen (...now/ now, now listen). When you say, "I hope so," what are you really saying?
What you are saying is that you are prepared for the best to happen but that you're not going to expend any effort towards it. You hope so. Does it cost too much to say, "I will make it so?" That was Captain Picard's empowering command: "Make it so!" That guy had balls! Imagine giving the helmsman a heading and then saying, "I hope so..." Talk about asking for a mutiny!
But YOU, who are both helmsman and captain of your life, what are you going to do? Now that I've brought this to your attention. Is your next course heading going to be followed with determination or sloth? Will you give yourself the command to "Make it so?" Or will you simply kick back, leave it to destiny's fickle winds and hope so?

Life is hard, then you die.

Res Loquitur Ipsa.
