It is easier to take in information about a subject if you really don't care about it one way or another. If you don't care about a particular subject, if you are not emotionally invested in it, you are less likely to have firm opinions already deeply implanted about it and you will definitely have less of an inclination to defend what you know at any particular point in time. It takes a zealot to furiously defend, and argue in favour of, what they were originally taught about any given subject. "Not caring" is simply taking the emotion out of your relationship with your beliefs. The last thing you want when you're learning something new is an epiphany.
